Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an effective method for diagnosing various conditions. The examination is completely safe and painless. You can have an MRI scan with or without a doctor’s referral.

MRI is short for magnetic resonance imaging. The method is based on the magnetic properties of the water in the body and the hydrogen in water. Magnetic resonance imaging does not produce any harmful radiation, making the examination safe, painless and suitable for all ages.

Magnetic resonance imaging can be used to precisely analyse almost every part of the body. It provides accurate images of different parts of the human body. It is especially well suited for imaging the head, spine and lumbar spine as well as bones and joints.

The main areas of application of MRI are scans of the musculoskeletal system, especially sports injuries. The MRI image reveals even the smallest sprains. The extent of the injury can also be precisely determined.

The most common reasons for an MRI scan include prolonged knee pain, neurological problems, accidents and strain injuries. Magnetic resonance imaging can be used to comprehensively examine almost every part of the body.

You can have an MRI scan at SYNLAB with or without a doctor’s referral. A referral is a form written by a doctor that specifies the tests necessary for the patient. You have the right to request a paper referral, in which case you can order the tests from your preferred service provider. A referral never obliges you to use the services of a specific medical chain. MRI scans taken at SYNLAB are also transferred to a national image archive where your treatment provider can access them.

In MRI, sets of images are usually taken from three different directions. The sets consist of multiple slices. The sets are designed according to the area to be scanned and the symptoms, which is why the extent of MRI varies. However, the extent does not significantly affect the duration of the scan, and the extent does not mean a wider scan area.

An MRI scan takes about 30 minutes and is typically aimed at a single subject, such as a knee or shoulder. You need to stay completely motionless during the scan. Learn more about the different steps of MRI scanning.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding do not prevent an MRI scan. However, during the first trimester of pregnancy, an MRI scan is only carried out if necessary and if the need for it is medically justified. There are some factors, such as having a pacemaker, that may prevent an MRI scan. However, you do not need to know the precise restrictions in advance, as we will review them together before the examination.

Results after the examination

After the MRI scan, you will receive the images taken in the scan and a radiologist’s statement within 1–3 working days. The statement can be viewed in SYNLAB’s online service. MRI scans taken at SYNLAB are also delivered to a national image archive where your treatment provider can access them. All test and examination results can be used at both public and private health centres and clinics.

You can submit an image transfer request using the form on our website. The use of the service requires strong user authentication. It is also possible to transfer MRI images to a CD. The image CD can be ordered from SYNLAB for free, either at the clinic when attending the scan or afterwards on our website. If we mail the CD, we charge a shipping fee of EUR 6.50.
