SYNLAB has regional prices.

How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

The examination measures airflow, breathing movements, potential snoring, blood oxygen levels, sleeping positions, and nighttime activity.

The examination equipment includes a chest-mounted measurement device, a finger sensor, and a nasal cannula.

The equipment is collected from a SYNLAB location, where you will receive instructions for completing the medical history form and wearing the device. The device is easy to put on, and you can also watch the instructions in a video (below). The night is spent sleeping at home, and the device is usually returned to the SYNLAB location the following day.

Steps to take for a sleep apnea examination

When scheduling your appointment, ensure you have time to relax before bedtime.

Book an appointment through the online booking system or by calling 010 326 3260.

At SYNLAB, no referral is required, though a referral may slightly reduce the cost.

Attend a 20-minute appointment at a SYNLAB location to receive instructions for wearing the device and completing the medical history form.

Put on the device before bedtime and sleep as usual.

Remove the device in the morning, complete the medical history form, and return both to SYNLAB as agreed, typically by 10 in the morning.

A pulmonary specialist with expertise in sleep studies will prepare a report based on the examination data. You will receive the results within 7 business days.

Results interpretation and sleep apnea treatment

The examination determines whether you experience nighttime breathing interruptions and whether you have sleep apnea. You will receive an easy-to-understand report prepared by a pulmonary specialist with expertise in sleep apnea examinations. The report will indicate whether you have sleep apnea and its severity level.

The report will also include recommendations on whether you should contact a doctor and provide potential treatment suggestions. Treatment methods vary depending on the severity of sleep apnea, its symptoms, and underlying causes, such as possible structural factors.
