Laboratory tests that require fasting

In examinations requiring fasting, you should not eat or drink for 10–12 hours before the blood test. Do not fast for more than 14 hours.

If necessary, you can have a glass of water during your fast.

We recommend taking fasting blood tests between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

If fasting is not required for the examination, you may eat a light meal before the test.

Examinations requiring fasting usually have a lowercase letter f in front of them, such as fP-Gluk.

Other considerations

• Please avoid alcoholic drinks 24 hours before sampling.

• Please do not smoke in the morning before sampling.

• Please do not consume caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, etc.) before sampling.

• Diabetics should follow their doctor’s instructions about fasting.

• Infants are not required to fast. Small children should fast, if possible, unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.
