MRI scan restrictions
There are a few reasons, such as having a pacemaker, that may prevent an MRI scan. However, you do not need to be familiar with all the restrictions in advance, as we will review them together before the examination.
Metals in the body are usually not an obstacle to the examination, but it is important to inform the medical staff before the scan. Please mention any insulin pump or cochlear implant when booking your appointment. We always assess on a case-by-case basis whether an MRI scan can be performed safely.
If you have metal, a foreign object, or an implant in your body, please contact our customer service. For safety reasons, it is essential to ensure that we have sufficient information about the metal before the examination.
No need to contact us if the metal is one of the following:
• Joint prosthesis
• Dental filling, dental prosthesis, or retention wire
• Bone support plate, nail, or screw
• Tattoo
There is also no need to contact us if the foreign object or implant is made of gold, titanium, aluminium, or lead.
MRI scan and pregnancy
Pregnancy or breastfeeding do not prevent an MRI scan. However, during the first trimester of pregnancy, an MRI scan is only performed if necessary and if the need is medically justified.
Weight limit for MRI scans
MRI scanners have a weight limit. In most of our clinics, the maximum weight limit for an MRI scan is 159 kg, and the width of the MRI scanner is 60 cm.
Exceptions include the MRI scanners at SYNLAB Espoo Tapiola and SYNLAB Tampere Ratina, where the weight limit is 250 kg, and the scanner bore width is 70 cm.
Please note that you must be able to get onto the MRI examination table on your own. A step next to the examination table is available to assist you.
Cancelling an MRI appointment
If you need to cancel your appointment, you can do so through our online service or by calling our booking service. Please note that appointments cannot be cancelled via email.
A fee of 150 € will be charged for appointments that are not cancelled or are cancelled less than 24 hours before the scheduled time.
