How to prepare for ultrasound examinations

Ultrasound examinations are based on the use of ultrasound. X-rays are not used in the examination.

An ultrasound examination is typically based on a doctor's referral, detailing the area to be imaged and the precise goals of the examination. The examination is performed by a radiologist.

The examination is painless and takes about 10–20 minutes. You may need to take off some of your clothes for the imaging.

When you arrive for your examination, please bring a photo ID with you.

How to prepare for the examination

Most ultrasound examinations do not require any preparations.

Before an ultrasound examination of the upper abdomen or stomach, you should not eat for four hours.

Before an ultrasound examination of the lower abdomen or urinary tract, you should not urinate for 2–3 hours.

Please arrive 10–15 minutes before your appointment.

Please avoid strong fragrances when visiting our clinic.
